We’re some pretty enthusiastic cross country skiers here at Top Gear, and we’ve travelled far and wide in search of the best snow in the region. These are some of our favorite spots:

North Park Golf Course Laurel Ridge State Park Whitegrass
As far as local skiing goes, the north hills tends to have a little more reliable snowfall. Area snowbirds like to ski the perimeter of the golf course. If you're lucky some wil already have cut tracks!

LRSP is hands down one of the coolest cross country ski facilities around. They have miles of trails groomed for both skate and classic, and two warming huts so you can sit, socialize, snack and make a day of it!

Whitegrass is one of the most extensive cross country ski centers in the region, boasting 60km of maintained trails dedicated to cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

Hartwood Acres Laurel Mountain State Park Wilderness Lodge

Cut a loop in the large grassy field off of Middle Road, or if there's lots of snow cover, take a walk in the woods. "Rock skis" recommended.

Another great venue within 1.5 hours of Pittsburgh. The terrain and grooming lends itself more to classic and touring ski styles.

With on-site accomodations, Wilderness is a great destination for a wintry weekend getaway. Take advantage of good eats and libations on site.

Schenley/Frick Park Wilderness Lodge
When we get a few inches of snowfall in the city, there's a lot of fun to be had skiing the main double-track veins of Frick Park. "Rock skis" recommended. At 2+ hours north of Pittsburgh, Wilderness is a bit of a haul for a day trip, but if the snow's right, it's worth it! They have an awesome lodge with a full kitchen and bar.
